Raising free-spirited black children in a world set on punishing them

( ratings)

Stacia L. Brown of the Washington Post writes and reflects on the different expectations of Black mothers compared to White mothers when it comes to raising their children. She not only highlights the difficulty of being a person of color raising children, but also the elevated importance and struggles coming from a lower socio-economic class. She draws on the cases of Laura Browder, Shanesha Taylor, and Debra Harell, in which they were criminalized for having to make choices that are similar to what their White counterparts made and were praised for–namely the Free Range Kids Movement.
