The murder of George Floyd catalyzed a reckoning around anti-Blackness, racism, and police violence in the United States. This reckoning galvanized the public, policymakers, and researchers alike to ask the following question: how is school safety defined and enacted? This article talks about LA-based community organizations’ work to create police-free schools, building off histories of abolition and community resistance to the criminalization of Black communities, Indigenous communities, and communities of color.
