In this chapter Geoffrey K. Pullum dives into the decision by an Oakland, CA school board to recognize African American Vernacular English, train teachers to look at it objectively and recognize its merits, and be deemed as appropriate for use in the classroom. This decision ultimately sparked outrage across the country. This chapter explores the history of AAVE and focuses on establishing its legitimacy and dispelling the notion that it is “Standard English with mistakes.”
